Some like it hot

I could see there was plenty of late-afternoon mist outside, so I grabbed the D60 and Tamron 17-50mm and blasted away. I did a short stroll down to the bridge and noticed that the rendition was nicer when the exposure was a little on the high side, as that tends to accentuate the fog.

I shot all of these files at f/4, and almost forgot about a fast zoom's dirty little secret - vignetting at wide apertures. You may not see it in these re-sized images, but it's there. Still, I am happy with the results of what was more or less a whim. Maybe I should have shot these or at least processed these as b/w files..........Thoughts?

The fall still lingers

I had originally thought the best of the autumn splendor had dissipated, but we had at least one more day to enjoy it. Despite a stiff breeze, I was able to use the 70-300mm VR and get some tight shots of the foliage, taking advantage of the backlight where possible.

It's time to move on to the next challenge, that being winter.

Frustrating week, great images

There are times in my life when I just feel like screaming - especially when things break at the worst possible times. My three-year-old Acer laptop decided it was going south and, without a trusty portable computer, my zest to take photographs was lessened. I took these yesterday on the way to do a desk duty shift in Mahone Bay, it was cold and unpleasant, but the light was amazing.

Now, with new laptop in hand, I am ready to get back at it and see if Capture NX2 runs quicker.

Just so you all know, backing up data is a life skill for many of us that needs to be learned. I have been burned enough and am thankful I have more than one place for image files, once they are gone, they are gone......

Portraits

Some people are just naturally obliging when a camera and lens are pointed at them. This gentleman has obliviously had a lot of experience with the public taking photos of him, due to his work place at Ross Farm. He seems to be photogenic, as well, it wasn't hard to get these images.

The myth is you need a medium telephoto to shoot portraits, that can work well, but I prefer to show the surroundings of the subject. My trusty Nikon AF-S 70-300mm VR allows me to vary how much detail I need in the backgrounds, and has decent bokeh to boot. Of course, a touch of fill-flash can help and the SB-600 did an admirable job. (it's my throw-in-the-camera bag flash when I don't think I'll need one but am happy to have it!)

The beauty of Nikon's flash system is the images looks so natural, but you can easily see the extra quality and depth to the images when the Speedlight is properly used.

You CAN play with fire

As I got home last night, the late-evening light was hitting the leaves on my trees just perfectly. I couldn't help myself as I grabbed the D60 and 70-300mm VR and started shooting, I knew it would be gone in a couple minutes. Thankfully, the VR technology works sterlingly well and I got some good captures in such a short window of opportunity.

Until I got into digital imaging, I would rarely have my camera equipment close at hand or even take it with me while driving. Thank goodness for the functional camera bags that Domke make.
